Inaugural Poet Amanda Gorman’s Inspiring Words
The inauguration of U.S. President Joe Biden on Wednesday, January 20, 2021, brought an unexpected new poet to the stage: Amanda Gorman. Her powerful reading of her poem “The Hill We Climb” has inspired countless people this week, including Shambhalians.
Many lines in the poem were striking. From a Shambhala perspective, her ending was spot-on:
“When day comes, we step out of the shade of flame and unafraid.
The new dawn balloons as we free it.
For there is always light, if only we’re brave enough to see it.
If only we’re brave enough to be it.”
By releasing our tight grasp of how we think the dawn should be, we free it. We can be a light with bravery and fearlessness.

Just one of the few inspirations in the poem:
‘ So, while once we asked, how could we possibly prevail over catastrophe, now we assert, how could catastrophe possibly prevail over us?
We will not march back to what was, but move to what shall be…’
Thanks, Tom! There were so many wonderful lines in her poem that it was hard to choose.
